A new community is growing in Streethouse

Land in the centre of the Meadway estate in Streethouse has got a new life after residents and our Estate Team saw it could be so much more.

After residents shared that they would like an allotment, our Estates and Environmental Teams got to work organising the land to be cleared and installed new taps for easy water access. With the support of Grow Wakefield, a new gardening club was formed to help residents get started on their new plot. Once cleared, the gardening club got to work!

The allotments are now starting to take shape and there are 12 mini plots with raised beds that gardening club members can take ownership of and a poly tunnel for seedlings.

Members can join the club for £3 a month and the group meets every Thursday from 10am until 12noon. Each member can enjoy working on their own mini plot with weekly support from Grow Wakefield. The group is the perfect place to get expert advice and meet new people.

The future also looks exciting with plans to install gravel footpaths, clear further areas of the land and restore an overgrown orchard on the land to its former glory.

Louise, a new member of the gardening club, said: "I'd been gardening in my own garden before and wanted to learn more about planting my own fruit and vegetables. When I heard about the gardening club I signed up and wasn't sure at first whether I should get my own plot, but since starting I've learnt so much! I've taken the plunge and got my own plot and I’m working on growing my own fruit and vegetables. Andy at Grow Wakefield has been great at teaching and answering all our questions to help us get started. I can't wait to see everything grow over the summer!

“At the end of the day, we're all here for the same reason, to learn something new and to garden. I think as well as growing plants a new community is starting to grow."

Emma Copes, Estate Officer, added: “It’s been fantastic to see residents and members of the gardening club work together to make the space their own. The raised beds are looking good with new seedlings and I can’t wait to see them thrive over the next few months.”
