Electricity meters are changing – find out how you can switch

Radio Teleswitching Systems (RTS) are being switched off for good on Monday 30 June, but don’t worry, there’s still time to switch your electricity meter with your provider.

RTS uses a radio signal to tell some older electricity meters when to switch between peak and off-peak rates, but they are coming to the end of their lifespan now and will stop working soon.

If you have an RTS meters and don’t upgrade, you could find your electric storage heater charges at the wrong time, possibly leading to higher bills, or it could mean loss of heating and / or hot water control.

How to tell if you have an RTS meter

·        Your home is heated using electricity or storage heaters.

·        You have a separate switch box near your meter with a Radio Teleswitch label on it.

Homes and businesses with RTS meters will need to get them upgraded before 30 June 2025

Customers need to arrange a replacement electricity meter with their energy supplier, if not there is a risk heating and hot water may stop working or if it does work could all be charged at the peak rate.
