Growing together: teaming up with B&Q to support our mini-allotment group

We believe every home is a place to grow and we’ve taken that belief literally in our support of the Streethouse Mini-Allotment Group.

The group, part of Grow Wakefield’s mini-allotment scheme, has transformed an unused shared space on Meadway into something truly special. We were happy to join forces with B&Q to help them to flourish with a donation of gardening tools and seeds.

The allotment group has created a welcoming space where our customers can come together to learn valuable skills, grow their own produce and build the community in the area. B&Q kindly donated a £50 voucher and a wide selection of vegetable seeds which the group said were  perfect for a grow-your-own Christmas dinner.

We contributed a full set of gardening tools and accessories, including gloves, trowels, watering cans, plant labels, and a variety of herb and vegetable seeds. The donations went down well with the group, their members said:

“Thank you for your donation towards us all being able to grow our Christmas dinner. Having my own mini allotment has improved my mental health and gives a sense of belonging in the community.”

“The mini allotment gives a sense of community. It helps me believe that community spirit is still here. It’s great to do things together and meet people who have a passion for the same things.”

“This donation will help us a lot. It’ll make things easier. The tools are for the group, so we can all use them instead of waiting to borrow something.”

“The kids have fun helping out. One of them likes to weed, the younger one goes straight to the strawberries. They’re learning where food comes from. They love to come.”

Anita Klaasen, Tenant Involvement Officer at Vico Homes, said: “This donation was our way of helping the group continue the hard work they’ve been doing.

"We’re so pleased to see how their efforts have paid off, how community spirit is growing, and especially how the children are learning about food, nature and helping others. We can’t wait to see the photos of their Christmas dinner veggies.”

The Streethouse Mini-Allotment Group is a shining example of what happens when we come together with a shared purpose. With the support of Vico Homes, B&Q and Grow Wakefield, they’re growing a stronger, more connected community.
