Vico Homes’ Sensory Nook, aimed at providing a calm and quiet space for colleagues who need a break from work or those who are neurodivergent, has been named as a finalist for an Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management Impact Award.
Shortlisted in the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative category, the Sensory Nook is a dedicated quiet space designed to provide a soothing environment for anyone who may need a break from sensory stimulation or just a peaceful moment during the workday.
The project was brought to life by Vico Homes’ Facilities Team, with help from the organisation’s Accessibility and Wellbeing colleague network. The Nook includes a privacy screen, an adaptable colour wheel, twinkling lights and a Bluetooth speaker. It is wheelchair accessible and has comfy seating inside for anyone who needs a safe space to take a moment.
So far, many colleagues have benefited from using the Nook, and it also reinforces Vico Homes’ commitment to looking after colleague wellbeing.
Gary Lindley, Facilities Manager at Vico Homes, said: “Back in April 2024 I visited the Workplace and Facilities Management show at Birmingham NEC and I noticed one of the stands was showcasing several sensory nooks. Chatting with colleagues in our Accessibility and Wellbeing Colleague-led Network, as well as our Wellbeing Champions, we all agreed this would be a great addition to the offices and fit well with our Wellbeing Policy for colleagues. The feedback we have had so far has been great, and the nook adds to our plans of being accessible and inclusive as possible.”
Sustainability Officer, Janice Fletcher-Jeal, added: “I’m very proud to work for a company that takes inclusion seriously. For anyone who suffers from sensory overload, migraine, or just needs to go find a place to ‘re-set’ and be fit for open office working, the Sensory Nook is a true-life saver.”
The Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management Impact Awards recognise and highlight inspirational exemplars for the facilities management profession and the various industries it services. The winners will be announced at an awards event in October.
