Safeguarding means protecting a person’s right to live safely, free from harm, abuse and neglect.

It’s about making sure that everyone, especially children, older adults and those who may be more vulnerable, is safe and well cared for.

This includes:

  • Listening to people’s concerns
  • Taking action when someone might be at risk
  • Helping someone to stay safe at home or in the community
  • Respecting people’s rights and dignity

What is abuse or harm?

There are many different types of abuse or neglect that a person may suffer or experience. Not every situation will be the same but it can include things like:

  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Domestic abuse
  • Financial abuse
  • Neglect
  • Exploitation
