“I had to discover myself again” – how Daria got back into work

Getting back into work isn’t always just about finding a job, it’s about rebuilding confidence.

That was true for Daria, who turned to our Community Employment Team when she was ready for a fresh start but wasn’t sure where to begin.

After being diagnosed with autism and generalised anxiety disorder, and recovering from depression, Daria knew she needed a different path. She had some experience in administrative tasks, but not in a full-time office role.

Daria said: “I’d completed a Level 2 certificate in Business Administration and was looking for a role that would build on my knowledge and give me experience in an office environment.

“I had to discover myself again and find a way of working that would be sustainable long term. I knew I’d need adjustments, and finding the right opportunity wasn’t easy.

“As I was starting a new career path, I felt my CV was often overlooked, even though I had relevant skills.”

Through the Community Employment Team, Daria joined the Training for Employment programme working in our Homesearch Team, giving her the chance to gain office-based experience.

She said: “My first meeting with Sarah in the Community Employment Team was really positive, she helped me improve my CV and supported me through the application process.

“When I was offered an interview, we prepared together and it made a big difference. I felt much more confident. The programme gave me the chance to build experience in an office role, which I hadn’t had before.”

That support continued throughout her placement, helping her grow in confidence and take on new challenges. Like many people starting something new, Daria faced moments of doubt when the role proved more challenging than expected.

She said: “I expected to become independent quickly, so when that didn’t happen, I started to feel like I wasn’t progressing fast enough. Reassurance from Sarah and the team helped me keep going.

“I now feel part of the team, more independent, and trusted with responsibility. I can see how far I’ve come.”

Now, Daria is looking ahead with a clearer sense of direction: “Working in Homesearch has given me a strong understanding of admin work. I feel more confident and ready to move into a permanent role.

“I’m exploring opportunities and have a better idea of what I want next. The experience I’ve gained will help me move forward with the confidence I needed to find again.”
