Transforming spaces to make a real difference

Garage demolitions might not sound like the most glamorous part of our job, but we know the big difference this work can make.

When we remove old or unused garages, it’s about much more than demolition. It’s about improving the places you live and making everyday life easier, safer and more enjoyable.

At Minden Close in Pontefract, a row of garages had fallen out of use over time. Changes in car sizes and lifestyle meant they were no longer meeting people’s needs, and the area had become a hotspot for antisocial behaviour.

We worked with residents to transform the space into something that better supports the community. The unused garages were removed and replaced with a modern, accessible parking area.

This has not only improved how the area looks but also made it easier and safer for people to visit, park and move around. Our residents have already seen the difference.

Anne, who lives on Minden Close, said: “It’s one hundred and ten percent better than before. There used to be a lot of antisocial behaviour with the garages. You’d worry about kids climbing on the roofs.

“It looks so much better now, and it’s made a big difference to how much light you get into some of the bungalows. It’s also much easier for my family to come and visit and park.”

Lesley, who lives on Minden Close, added: “It looks absolutely brilliant. Before, it felt dark and unsafe and you never knew who might be around the garages.

“Now it’s open, brighter, and there’s proper parking so people aren’t stopping on the bus route. We were kept in the loop all the way through the work and it’s been a really positive experience.”

By making changes like this, we’re helping to create safer, more open spaces, improve access for residents and visitors, and support stronger communities.

What might seem like a small change can make a big difference to day-to-day life!
