Wakefield Council has shared its proposals for the regeneration of Wakefield city centre.
These plans include the demolition and redevelopment of the Ridings Shopping Centre and our city centre apartments (Greenwood, Manor, Trinity, Tudor and Warren House). The Cathedral Quarter redevelopment is planned to take place in stages over 10 to 15 years and includes a range of new green spaces and facilities. We’re talking to the Council about what this means for our customers and they have committed to prioritising the creation of new affordable homes in the first phase of development to replace your apartments.
The plans will be considered at the Council’s Cabinet meeting on Tuesday 17 February. If approved, a consultation will start for residents and businesses to give their views.
We understand this news will be worrying but we’re supporting our customers and will keep communicating with them as we get more information about next steps and timescales from Wakefield Council.
A message from Wakefield Council: “The Cathedral Quarter redevelopment is the bold move our city needs to thrive. But we understand this will mean big changes for many of you, in the near future. So, we’re putting you first with a commitment to deliver modern, high quality and sustainable homes for Vico Homes residents in the initial phase of redevelopment. We’ll be working closely with Vico Homes to make sure you’re supported and can continue calling the city your home, if you choose to do so.” Mark Lynam, Corporate Director for Regeneration and Economic Growth.
You can see the plan for the Cathedral Quarter on the Council's website and there’ll be opportunities to help shape the proposals for the Cathedral Quarter when they go on display in the city from March.
