Our Wildlife Champions campaign

Let it Bee

We kickstarted our Let it Bee project in partnership with students from Kettlethorpe High School who became our Wildlife Champions of 2026.

The students explored the importance of biodiversity and helped shape how we communicate and promote this within our communities. Their work focused on making information clear and accessible, promoting the benefits of relaxed mowing, and encouraging simple actions people can take to support wildlife.

Following two workshops with the Vico Homes team, the students put together action plans to promote our wildgrass areas before delivering their presentations (full of awesome ideas) at our head office in front of a panel of judges.

See what they have to say in our video

Their ideas have played an important role in how we're approaching the project.

Our wildlife champions put together a list of things you can do to help.
  • Instead of bagging clips, leave them to decompose naturally, returning nutrients to the soil and supporting microbials

  • Avoid mowing during key times for wildlife

  • Set your mower blades higher to encourage native plant growth.

  • Designate specific areas of your yard as "wild" or "meadow" zones.

  • Adopt organic lawn care practices to support soil health

  • Share your relaxed mowing practices with neighbours and friends to inspire them to adopt similar approaches

  • Support wildlife charities

  • Engage in local conservation activities

  • Monitor and protect local species

  • Reduce chemical use

  • Install bird feeders and nesting boxes

What the students say

“The long grass and greenery provide wildlife with cover and improves food and water sources for them And green spaces help moderate local temperatures and humidity levels. So overall Increased happiness and well-bee-ing, not only for wildlife but also for us!”

“Biodiversity is an important issue in many communities. Did you know that Since 1930, England has suffered a 20% loss in biodiversity. We need everyone to do their part to fix this.”

“By not mowing we can attract small animals like squirrels or hedge hogs and insects like bees and ladybugs to our environment.”

“Green spaces are vital for the environment. Climate change is still happening but by planting more plants, we can encourage more biodiversity. By doing this, we won't need many resources to keep the plants healthy. All we have to do is protect them.”
